The international conference Asia Update 2019 was held in Tartu from 9-10 May. President Kersti Kaljulaid opened the conference with a speech and was followed by several world-class speakers, which made the conference unique and the biggest Asian-oriented conference in the region.
Two thoughts stayed with us from the speech of President Kaljulaid. Geography is dead; the focus should shift from regional sales to world sales and it’s important to sell value-added products rather than just cheap products.
The attendees of the conference organised by Enterprise Estonia, the University of Tartu, Tallinn University, Tallinn University of Technology and several ministries discussed the meaning of globalising Asia for the world and our region as well as how to increase cooperation with Asia in business, politics and education.
Haage is a small village in Southern Estonia surrounded and protected by forests, but there is no doubt that we, the people living here, consider ourselves a part of the globalised world. We like to think big, and it’s extremely beneficial to do this among specialists.
