Viljandi is the place to experience culture, music and romance in autumn every bit as much as it is in summer. The Viljandi Guitar Festival has been bringing the beauty and charm of acoustic playing to Estonian music lovers every autumn since 2008, giving audiences the chance to celebrate and support its evolution. Cheering on the performers and quenching the thirst of the audiences at this year’s festival was Haage Natural Mineral Water.
The 12th Viljandi Guitar Festival, which was held from 8-13 October, showcased both local talent and big names from the world stage. Concerts were given by Jaak Sooäär, Toomas Vanem, Manish Pringle feat. Brian Melvin, Jonathan Kreisberg and Nelson Veras, Yamandu Costa (Brazil) and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra with conductor Risto Joost, Martin Taylor and Ulf Wakenius and more.
The concerts were followed by guitar workshops and masterclasses for students. In association with the Estonian Jazz Union, the 12th Tiit Paulus Award for Young Guitarists was also awarded as part of the festival, which this year went to Johannes Laas.
If you have yet to make it to the festival, make a note in your diary for next autumn right now! The colours of October, the stunning views Viljandi offers and the amazing music go so well together that you can’t help but enjoy it.
“Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two.”
